Let me first begin by saying that I am not an American, have never been to America (although it is my dream), and perhaps should not be involved in this discussion. I also know that very recently, your blog had some interesting notes regarding the immigration issue. But as I peer through my lens from my lofty university chair, I could not help but write a small note expressing my opinion on what I see will destroy your country sooner or later.
On Monday, President George W. Bush announced that in an effort to address illegal immigration into the United States he has proposed deploying thousands of National Guard troops along the Mexican border while initiating a guest worker program and a path toward legalization for some undocumented workers already in your country. The White House’s plan has pit the Bush administration against Mexico and has also become divisive amongst the politicians, where activists on both extremes criticize its attempt to chart a middle course. Cannot these people take a stand on any issue?
What I am seeing is a potential problem that will harm rather than do your country any good, if you loosen the reins on illegal immigration. Case and point: here in the Netherlands, we allowed all of the misfits from Arab countries to enter our country legally, in an attempt appear progressive. What resulted is a community of angry Muslims (in the millions) raping, pillaging and murdering Dutch citizens. They have actually intimidated the entire government into the corners. The same thing is happening in France. The revolt that just took place was not purely student inspired; it was mobs of angry Muslims who raged the streets, looting, burning and intimidating, until the French government acquiesced.
What I am seeing is the same thing happening to your country. If you think that the bold demonstrations by people who have committed an illegal act (illegal entrance into a foreign country) and waving Mexican flags was just a nuisance (and I believe others are planned), just wait until 12 million and more become citizens as a result of your caving in to pressure. How many of them will be terrorists or people who hate Americans? Remember the 911 murderers were supposed students living illegally inside your country? Wait and see how it feels to be France or the Netherlands. Your politicians, like ours, are performing for their own interests, not yours. Are they spineless? Can’t they see the big picture? Yes they can, but the question should be: do they really care? Stop the spinelessness.
